True Love Is Always Unconditional — Ask God

If you are a true believer who is committed to dating for marriage, then you need to prioritize finding a partner who strives to embody unconditional love. In today’s world, God’s model of love has been cast aside by the countless people who have been led astray into lives of sin. God has always provided humanity with a pristine example of what love can truly be: unconditional and all-consuming. Unfortunately, evildoers and those who seek to undermine His will have fed people lies about what love is.
Instead of looking to the Bible for guidance about what love is, far too many people have begun to look to ungodly media for examples of love. The result? Many people—some of them even Christians—have lost sight of what true love actually is. Rather than seeking an unconditional love like what they can find in their Heavenly Father, people now seek love that is based on conditions. Are you attractive enough? Are you wealthy enough? Do you have a high enough ranking job? Do you have a big enough house? All of these conditions hinge on superficial measures of whether someone is “enough,” and they are the exact opposite of the kind of love that God directs us to search for.
Ephesians 5:25 says, “For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her." Scripture tells us that God’s intent is for the sacrosanct bonds of marriage to be fundamentally rooted in a deep, abiding, unconditional love. Christ did not ask the church or its people questions to assess if they were worthy of being saved. He knew that they were inherently worthy of love, up to and including a love so selfless that He sacrificed himself willingly.
This is further clarified in 1 Peter 4:8, which says, “Above all, love each other deeply, for love covers over a multitude of sins." God’s love is truly unconditional. Even in the face of our flaws and vulnerabilities, He loves us. Even when we sin or break from a righteous path, God is always there ready and willing to welcome us back into His flock with open arms. His vision for true love is what we must all aspire to in our earthly relationships, and particularly in our romantic partnerships.
An obedient single Christian will commit to dating for marriage with spiritual intentionality and not date with pre-marital sex in mind. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." To honor God’s plan for us means honoring the edict he has laid before us to love each other unconditionally. Unconditional love provides a strong, righteous foundation for a Godly life with your mate. Think of it as similar to the foundation of a house. Judgmental, conditional comments and thoughts are hammer blows that weaken the foundation and can cause the structure to crumble, while unconditional love is the mortar that holds everything together and makes the foundation stronger than the sum of its parts.
